Islamic history would be incomplete without appreciating what transpired when the prophet (sol-solah) got to Madinah city and afterwards. It must be recalled that the prophet (sol-solah) only spent thirteen years in Makkah propagating the message of Islaam from where the earlier sent prophets stopped and ten years in Madinah. Indeed, life after Hijroh of the prophet is very crucial to the development of Islaam. It was during these years that a number of great achievements were recorded.
Life after Hijrah presupposes a new regime of Islamic affairs. For instance, prior to the prophet's migration to Madinah, two of the five pillars of Islaam were only legislated during the prophet's life in Makkah. Other complimentary pillars and other ancillary Islamic issues fully evolved after Hijroh to Madinah. While the majority of the Islamic message (risaalah) before Allaah ordered the prophet to migrate to Makkah was centered on taw-heed (monotheism and related concepts), the Islamic message in Madinah was majorly on injunctions. Thus, in an effort to dissect the discussion on these notable events during the thirteen years of the prophet’s stay at Madinah, we shall be taking it bit by bit till the end of the tenth year. So, come on board with us.
Prior to the final hijrah of the Prophet, the prophet and his faithful companions were persecuted while they were in Makkah. They were never given the freedom to practice the ordained religion of monotheism—Islaam. Consequently, upon this, the prophet (sol-solah) ordered his followers to migrate to various places like Tooif (known as Ethiopia) etc.
The situation continued until Allaah, the Most High, gave the prophet permission and a directive to migrate from Makkah to Madinah. Upon the directive, the prophet did as he was ordered. He set out on the journey with his beloved friend, Abu Bakar. See tafsiir of Q9 v 40 (At-tawbah). This journey event is termed "Al-hijroh", meaning "migration" in the history of Islaam.
The journey happened to be in the month of Robii`ul-Awwal in the year 623 C.E. When the prophet (sol-solah) got to Qubaa', he took a break. And the masjid known as Masjid Qubaa' was built. See Qur-aan exegesis on Q9 vs 108.
As the journey continued in progress from Qubaa' to Madiinah, the prophet observed Solaatul-jumu`ah with the clan of Saalim. This marks the first Jumu`ah (Friday prayer) in Islamic history. He also gave his first khutubah (sermon). Afterwards, the journey to Madinah continued.
Al-hamdu lillaah, the prophet got to Madinah with his friend Abu Bakar in peace. The people of Madinah as well have been anticipating for their arrival. On getting there, everyone wishes the prophet could stay with them. However, the prophet later stayed with Abuu Ayyuub, who happened to have a storey building. He stayed until he later built his own house and that of his wives.
